- Catherine King-Frazier worked at NASA's curatorial lab, analyzing lunar rock samples, before coming to work at JMU's Department of Geology and Geography in 1980. In 1984, King-Frazier was part of the Antarctic Search for Meteorites Project (ANSMET) team that discovered the famous Allan Hills 84001 meteorite, which was determined to be of Martian origin and once thought to contain fossilized evidence of microbial life from that planet. After her death in 1990, the JMU Foundation created the Catherine King-Frazier Memorial Geology Scholarship in her honor. The fund still provides scholarships for the most promising freshman geology major.
