William Harpine Bowman was born on Aug. 26, 1833 in Shenandoah County and married Emily Frances Huffman of Harrisonburg. His first ancestor in Virginia was George Bowman who built the old Bowman homestead, called Fort Bowman or Harmony Hall, on Cedar Creek near Strasburg in 1751. William Bowman settled in Peach Grove, Rockingham County, and became a prominent local citizen as a farmer and community leader. He served as an officer of the Undine Lodge, and was involved in educational support (helped to purchase a stove for the New Union School in 1857, etc.) From 1870-72 he acted as a Justice of the Peace in the Ashby Township in Rockingham County.
