Summary
This collection consists of various land deeds and miscellaneous legal and business documents for Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties, Va. The farm journal, kept by William Mathias Harner of McGaheysville, Va., contains daily one-line entries describing agricultural activities for most of the time period from Aug. 1847 to May 1861. The legal and business documents center primarily on debt papers and purchases lists, including an account with L. P. Henkel & Co., a local general store. Legal and business documents, as well as land deeds and indentures are signed, with frequent reference to the following family names: Pence, Fry, John Linhoss, Nave, and Homan. One document a piece is signed by then governor Henry Lee (1793) and Lt. governor Beverley Randolph (1787). There is one Civil War letter dated July 1, 1865 written by Maj. C. Shirley, 12th Va. Cavalry, C.S.A. mentioning the surrender and a transfer of horse ownership
